Rafał Trzaskowski, the candidate for Poland's president from the ruling Civic Coalition (KO), has said that the continued presence of American businesses in Poland is both an economic asset and a crucial element of the country’s security.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Polish-American Chamber of Commerce in Warsaw on Wednesday, Trzaskowski said that strong US investment signals long-term American commitment to Poland, particularly important in the context of regional tensions caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“The fact that your companies are investing here despite the war across our eastern border confirms, beyond any doubt, that Poland is safe and stable," Trzaskowski told attendees.

"It is also a clear confirmation of American security guarantees," he added.

He emphasised that American companies currently employ around 330,000 people in Poland and play a vital role in driving economic growth and job creation.

"We always say that we welcome investors, not only because they contribute to economic growth but because they also create jobs, and that’s something we must not forget," he said.

Trzaskowski credited American businesses with playing a decisive role in Poland's post-communist transformation, saying that the country's economic success over the last 30 years "would not have been possible without them."

He described strong economic ties with the United States as one of the most important components of the broader Polish-American relationship, calling them "a pillar of our alliance."

'Our alliance with US is absolute foundation of our security'

He also told the meeting that these ties have remained strong regardless of political changes in Washington.

"We do not have an alliance with a specific administration," he said. "Our alliance with the United States is the absolute foundation of our security."

However, he acknowledged recent public opinion shifts showing that Poles increasingly view the European Union and European nations as their most trusted allies. "This shows that we all have serious work to do," he said.

Trzaskowski argued that instead of imposing tariffs, Poland, the EU and the United States should work toward a formal trade agreement.

"If we want to grow and remain safe, the only path forward is strengthening ties between the EU, Poland, and the United States," he said. "We should be sending a message to the world that we are each other’s closest allies, not imposing tariffs that hurt both sides."

He called for closer economic cooperation that benefits both Europe and America: "The more we deepen our economic ties, the more prosperity we create on both sides of the Atlantic. Everyone stands to gain."

'Full synergy'

According to Trzaskowski, strengthening Poland’s relationship with the United States and boosting its position within the European Union are not mutually exclusive goals.

"There is full synergy here – our leadership role in the EU strengthens our partnership with the US, and our credibility with the US strengthens our standing in the EU," he said.

The Polish-American Chamber of Commerce, founded in 1990, represents American businesses operating in Poland. It promotes bilateral economic cooperation and supports US firms seeking to invest in Poland.

The organisation is part of the wider American network of chambers of commerce across Europe.
